Transcript guide

How to translate a YouTube video transcript

Translate the captions of any YouTube video into another language while keeping every timestamp.

Captions first, then translation

Start with the caption track that matches the spoken language — it is usually the most accurate. The language menu in the reader shows every caption track the video provides.

Translate in the reader

Open the Translate menu and choose a target language. Long videos are translated in parts, and you can start reading as soon as the first part is ready.

  1. Choose Translation to read only the translated text.
  2. Choose Both to compare each original line with its translation.
  3. Download the translation as SRT, VTT, TXT or Markdown.

Translated subtitles for your own videos

Because each line keeps its timing, a translated SRT or VTT file can be loaded into most video editors and players. Review the translation before publishing it.

Learning a language with transcripts

Read the original and the translation side by side, pause the video at a line you want to practice and search for words to see how they are used in context.
