How to use a YouTube transcript with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
Turn any video into notes, quizzes, posts or answers by pairing its transcript with an AI assistant.
Updated
Why give AI the transcript
Chat assistants cannot reliably watch a video for you. Giving them the transcript lets them work with exactly what was said, and timestamps let them point you back to the right moment.
Copy a prompt with the transcript
Open the AI prompts tab in the reader, choose a prompt and select Copy prompt or one of the assistant buttons. The prompt, video title, link and transcript are copied together; paste them into the chat if they are not prefilled.
Prompts that work well
Specific prompts produce better results than “summarize this”.
- Study notes with headings, key terms and examples.
- A 10-question quiz with an answer key.
- A YouTube description with chapter timestamps.
- A list of claims to fact-check, with timestamps.
- Action items from a tutorial or recorded meeting.
Very long videos
Transcripts of multi-hour videos can exceed what some assistants accept in one message. Remove sections you do not need in Edit mode, or work through the video in parts.
