How to summarize a YouTube video with AI

Get the key points of a long video in seconds: an AI summary from the transcript, plus prompts for deeper notes.

Why summarize from the transcript

A summary written from the transcript reflects what is actually said in the video — not the title, thumbnail or description. Because each key moment points to a timestamp, you can verify any point in seconds.

Summarize a video in three steps

Open the YouTube summary page, paste the link and choose Summarize video.

  1. Paste any YouTube link with captions.
  2. Pick the language you want the summary in.
  3. Read the overview, takeaways and key moments; click a moment to watch it.

Ask for exactly what you need

A general summary is a good start. For study notes, a quiz, action items or a blog outline, open the AI prompts tab, choose a prompt and send it with the transcript to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

Know the limits

AI can miss nuance, sarcasm or context from visuals that are never spoken. Summaries of music, gameplay or videos with little dialogue are short. For anything important, read the relevant section of the full transcript.
